User Interface Patterns

Standardization and quality are the buzzwords of IT today. This applies to UI design too which is predominantly right brain driven by intuition and aesthetics. But things are changing. Usability and User experience are changing the myths of UI design. Patterns have been there for quite sometime in the industries like manufacturing, architecture etc., Its hightime it sets its foot into IT. Sun Microsytems was the pioneer to define and include patterns as standards for programming and coding. Now user experience designers are starting to follow the path and are more keen to include patterns into their mainstream to allow people to have a lucid experience. Enough said: Follow these links to know more about UI patterns and their implementations This should be wealth of information for the new age web designers and user interface architects. 1. http://time-tripper.com/uipatterns/index.php?page=About_Patterns 2. http://www.welie.com/patterns/ 3. http://widget.eleganthack.com/ More to come on this... have a nice day ciao

What is Design? One of the good wiki sites on design puts it as below: In the context of the applied arts, engineering, architecture and other such creative endeavours, design is both a noun and a verb. The verb is the process of originating and developing a plan for an aesthetic and functional object, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modelling, iterative adjustment and re-design. The noun is used both for the final plan of action (a drawing, model or other description), or the result of following that plan of action (the object produced). In philosophy, the abstract noun design refers to purpose/purposefulness, or teleology. Design is thus contrasted with purposelessness, randomness, or lack of complexity. The design of complex systems is sometimes called architecture. Design in India has been very always seen as an extension of art and was never conceived to be a concept of Engineering also. This creates a great rift between the design community and the others leaving many enthusiasts of design hardly much to look for in the design community. Though we have been a land of creative people known for some of the great works of art and design innovations for the past 2 milleniums we still don't have much forums / proper courses in the social arena to cater to designers. Compared to the global design centers like Europe and USA we still lag behind in areas like Design Education, Design Collaboration etc., Its time institutes like National Institute of Design, IIT and other handful of Design Centers think about popularising design in India and making it lucrative and enticing. Lets hope that the best is yet to come ! Some of the good design links that may be of help: http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/ http://www.look4design.com/
